Basking in New Bedford
Location via Waze
New Bedford has been called, “City that Lit the World.” It is not just the capital of the 19th century whaling industry although that is the most popular piece of its history. Many other stories can be found about the Underground Railroad, immigration from around the globe, the textile industry and the history of its growth through the many pioneers. We are so fortunate to live in close proximity and make this a day trip. Although we did find that a day is not enough. But we were able to experience a sampling of the beauty, history and diversity of this beautiful seaside city.
This park offered miles of smooth pavement, well manicured grounds, a playground for the kids, a beach, picnic tables, a museum, plaques with historical information and unlimited free parking all situated on the oceanfront.
Now we enter the Whaling Museum… It’s gonna be a WHALE of a time !
Our tour guide shows us whale teeth !
Up next, as we exit the whaling museum, let us show you something we are sure you never knew. The whale’s bones displayed from the ceiling still contain oil. There is a clear hose pictured with oil currently dripping into a glass beaker.
As we close the door on the whaling city that lit the world, we find ourselves educated in areas of this history we never knew before. Definitely fell in love with New Bedford. So much to see, so much to do… All of it totally outstanding ! Until the next time, New Bedford, we say thank you and WHALE see you again !
